Joseph Ryelandt

Joseph Ryelandt was a Belgian composer born in 1870 in the well-known city of Bruges, the same city where he died almost centenarian in 1965 (yestarday, related to standard of I usually post).

An very religious person, he saw composing as a religion itself, voted to create beauty in the world. He was also a very modest person, known to having said: "If God wants my work to be known one day, that will happen. If not, what does it matter? The task of the artist is to create, and that's it. Success is a luxury and a pleasure, it's not indispensable."

On SPs score videos, you can discover two of his works:

  • his Piano Quintet in A minor, an energic chamber work

  • Agnus Dei, a one hour and half long Easter Oratorio, the fourth of his five masterwork Oratioros (sadly the others are unavailable in score and/or recording)

Don't miss these two very different samples from the same very obsure and underrated composer! Enjoy!
