Meet Peter Benoit!
Peter Benoit was born Flanders in 1834. He started studying at a young age, and at 23 he won the Belgian Prix de Rome, and started traveling also in Germany and France.
After a great career, he died in Antwerp in 1901.
He's known for having tried to create an indipendent "Flemish school" of composition (he even changed his name from the original Pierre to the Dutch Peter). He actually didn't succeded very well, and some commenters on my Requiem video pointed out that these indipendentist/nationalist ideas caused Peter Benoit to be rarely performed nowadays even in Belgium (if you're from Belgium and want to confirm or correct this info, please share!).
On SPs score videos, you can discover six of Peter Benoit's works:
the short Kerstmis (Noël)
the huge Hoogmis (Messe solennelle)
a magnificent Te Deum
an incredible Requiem [this four works forming Benoit's Religious Tetralogy, riunited in this playlist]
a Symphonic Poem for Piano and Orchestra (basically a Piano Concerto)
the Orchestral Suite from his opera De Pacificatie van Gent, about the so called Pacification of Ghent, a political alliance occurred in the Netherlands in 1576.
I hope you'll enjoy this underappreciated composers as I did!
